Burnt area in the Global Wildfire Information System (version 2-3-1)

Collection: CEMS-GWIS : Copernicus Emergency Management System - Global Wildfire Information System

Description

This dataset series refers to the information on burnt area provided by the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS). ▷_How to cite: see below_◁

Burnt area information is derived after the MODIS burnt area product which provides burning and quality information on a per-pixel basis. This dataset is not near real time, and fire events require more than one month be available (please see temporal granularity of the source product https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/dataset_discovery/modis/modis_products_table/mcd64a1_v006 ). Initial and final dates of the fires are subject to an uncertainty of few days.

Lineage information

Burnt area information is based on the MODIS burnt area product (MCD64A1) which provides burning and quality information on a per-pixel basis (more details may be accessed at https://modis-land.gsfc.nasa.gov/burn.html ). The source information is based on MODIS Collection 6 combining imagery from Terra and Aqua, along with thermal anomalies. Such data provide burnt date estimates per pixel at the global scale. GWIS uses MCD64A1 as a source to create a fire-event based database. The post-processing aggregates in time and space the burnt pixels identifying individual fires, extracting the fire evolution and computing a final area. Then, each fire event is tagged with an unique numerical identifier, initial and final fire date and all the burnt areas for every day during the duration of the fire.
