Description
The Global Wildfire Information System is an initiative lead by the European Commission Joint Research Centre in the context of the Copernicus (Regulation (EU) No 377/2014) and the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) work programs aiming at collecting information on wildfire occurrence and impact at the global level and defining and analysing wildfire regimes at national, regional and global levels.
GWIS provides historical and current data on wildfire activity and wildfire impact at the national, regional and global levels on the basis of information derived from multiple sources of satellite imagery.
Data collection is supported by partner organizations, which include universities, research institutions and space agencies (e.g. ESA, NASA) and established networks in different regions of the world.
