EMIS - BLACK SEA Monthly climatology sea surface Chlorophyll-a concentration in mg.m^-3

QR code

Monthly climatology sea surface Chlorophyll-a concentration (in mg.m^-3 (log10)) for the Black sea derived from the MODIS-AQUA sensor (Satellite remote sensing Ocean color data):

Chlorophyll is a photosynthetic pigment commonly present in all phytoplankton species. It is used as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass.

Chlorophyll concentration is a standard product from satellite-based optical sensors, usually retrieved from empirical algorithms using reflectance ratios at two or more wavebands.

Lineage information

General information: Monthly climatology sea surface Chlorophyll-a concentration for the Black Sea obtained from the application of a regional bio-optical algorithm to MODIS-A satellite data (algorithm details are available in Zibordi et al. 2015). The bio-optical algorithm relies on in situ measurements performed in the Western Black Sea between 2006 and 2011 within the framework of the JRC Bio-Optical Mapping of marine Optical Properties program (BioMaP, Zibordi et al. 2011). The MODIS-A top of the atmosphere data were corrected for the atmospheric perturbations by applying the SeaWiFS Data Analysis System (SeaDAS) software package version 7.0. Other contextual information: The product is stored in NetCDF data and available for download.
