Description
Activation date: 2021-07-02
Event type: Wildfire
Activation reason:
The CEMS Risk and Recovery STANDARD has been activated by the EU Delegation to UK and Northern Ireland as Authorized User (AU), on behalf of the End User (EU) that is the Northern Ireland Executive. The event was a 3km wide wildfire in the Mourne Mountains of County Down which ran from 23 April (start) to 25 April 2021 (main fires extinguished). This activation aimed at delineating the extent of the fire trough the RRM STANDARD product wildfire delineation and grading (P07) and providing an estimate of Land Use Land Cover impact with the impact assessment (P14) product. The P07-Wildfire delineation and grading product has been generated by using post-event HR satellite images. The analysis resulted in 277.4 ha burnt, of which 151.6 ha only slightly damaged, 116 ha moderately damaged and 9.8 ha highly damaged. The P14-Impact assessment analysis on assets and population shows that the fire ravaged inside an unpopulated area. The nearby city of Newcastle falls only with a small part within the boundary of the provided AOI. The vegetation in the burned area consists mainly of heath, pastures, and sparsely vegetated area. The damage to forests was minimal. No buildings and no transportation infrastructure were affected by the fire, except for a few hiking trails.
