Activation date: 2018-12-14
Event type: Humanitarian
Activation reason:
Since 2015, Yemen has experienced a devastating civil war, resulting, among other things, in physical damage to the building stock and infrastructures. The purpose of the requested mapping is to generate asset damage assessment information for the Aden and Sana'a cities in Yemen, as well as information on their expansion within selected reference periods.Damages’ AssessmentThe analysis involved photointerpretation of VHR satellite imagery, through comparing pre-conflict (2015) and up-to-date (2018) image datasets and the assignment of a damage severity category (moderate damage, severe damage, destroyed and razed to the ground assets) to each examined asset (building stock, pipelines, etc.). Urban Morphology Urban SprawlNight Lights MappingThe information on the light intensity recorded during the night gives an indication on the population night activities, supporting the analysis of human footprint of Aden and Sana'a cities. The analysis is based on the calculation of the Sum Of Lights (SOL) index using VIIRS satellite sensors. In order to understand the effects of the conflict on the socioeconomic development, the analysis is performed: (1) before the beginning of the civil war (2014 until February of 2015), (2) in an intermediate period (end of 2016), and (3) for the third period of the civil war (2018).
