Water quality assessment of river Odra (2022-08-29)

QR code

Activation date: 2022-08-29

Event type: Other

Activation reason:

The activation was triggered due to a massive fish die-off in the Odra (Oder) river beginning in late July 2022 in the upstream area around the village of Lipki and moving downstream to Kostrzyn nad Odrą, where dead fishes were encountered at 10th of August 2022. The activation aims to provide a water quality information layer based on a Sentinel 2 analysis for 1) the most recent situation around the city of Wrocław and 2) the evolution during the summer period of 2022 in comparison to 2021 and 2020. With that aim the following products were generated: Reference data (P1) showing the most recent situation of relevant landscape elements such as POI, transportation network, LULC. Determination of the water quality parameters (P2) chlorophyll-a concentration and suspended particulate matter showing the most recent situation for all water bodies around the city of Wrocław. Chlorophyll-a concentration time series analysis (P3) along the complete river at Polish territory, showing the evolution over the summer period (June-August) of 2022 and comparing 2021/ 2020. Fig. Evolution of the Chlorophyll-a concentration at sample site Frankfurt/Oder 2022 To derive the results, the SNAP C2RCC processor was used on the Senitnel-2 products identified in this activation. Results showed an increase on the chlorophyl-a and TSM values in Summer 2022, coinciding with the pollution event reported. The comparison of the same water quality parameters for the same period in 2021 and 2020 shows the exceptionality of the event that took place on summer 2022.
