Copernicus Emergency Management System - European Forest Fire Information System

Acronym: CEMS-EFFIS

Description

The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) is the hub for data and information on forests fires in Europe. Its development at the European Commission Joint Research Centre, since 1998, follows a series of EU Regulations on the collection and harmonization of forest fire information in Europe in support of fire administrations in the countries, European Commission Services and the European Parliament and the implementation of the EU Forest Strategy (COM (2013) 659 final). Since 2015, EFFIS is a component of the Copernicus Emergency Management Services (Regulation (EU) No 377/2014).

EFFIS provides historical and up to date information on fire occurrence and impact in Europe, North Africa and Middle East, aiming at supporting forest fire prevention and analysing fire regimes. EFFIS datasets comprise information derived in the system on fire danger, fire occurrence and fire impact (e.g. soil erosion, fire emissions, vegetation regeneration) as well as information collected by the countries in the EFFIS network and stored in its Fire Database.
