Event time (UTC): 2019-09-30 18:30:00
Event type: Flood (Riverine flood)
Activation reason:
Can Tho city in the Mekong Delta is currently experiencing flooding which is (according to local residents) higher than in previous years. Many houses have been flooded, traffic and economic activities have been disrupted. The reason for flooding is the coincidence of high water levels in the Mekong River with very high lunar tides in the South China Sea. In the flat Mekong Delta the ocean tides influence the height of the river for more than 200km upstream. Can Tho is 80km from the river mouth and strongly affected by tides.
