Since April 2021, the waters of Lake Tanganyika have been rising at an alarming rate, reaching levels not seen in 60 years. The Institut géographique du Burundi (IGEBU) has predicted heavy rainfall between March and May 2024, and the forecasts seem accurate as major rainfall is being experienced. The impact of this rising water level includes loss of agricultural production, displaced populations, and the closure of businesses and other activities.
In Bujumbura, apart from the economic infrastructure at risk such as the port and airport, there is concern about REGIDESO's only water catchment point, which supplies water to a large part of Bujumbura and is located 3,500 meters from the lake shore.
The aim of this activation is to deliver flood risk assessment information, based on various scenarios of water-level rise. This includes analysis based on current forecasts and a medium-level risk scenario as well as critical infrastructure exposure assessment.
