Event type: Flood (Riverine flood)
Activation reason:
In the early afternoon of November 20, 2020 an intense perturbation due to a deep cyclone in the Ionian Sea hit the Ionian coast of Calabria. Over 400 mm of precipitation was recorded during the entire event. The high rate of precipitation reached the historical rate recorded in 1996 and 2018. Serious damage was recorded in the cities of Crotone, Isola Capo Rizzuto and Cirò. The Esarco and Neto rivers overflowed the embankments and flooded the nearby areas cutting several power lines. The Copernicus EMS RM service was requested to produce Delineation (DEL) and Grading (GRA) products.
