Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming risk assessment and buffer pool datasets for forests [Deprecated]

QR code

A grid dataset (35 km resolution) that contains the risk assessment of natural disturbances in forests and the corresponding buffer pool for carbon farming projects under the EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation. The dataset integrates multiple risk indicators, including current species presence, suitability of tree species under RCP 4.5 climate projections, and current forest natural disturbance regimes, alongside estimates of above-ground biomass loss due to natural disturbance events. Each hexagon contains a combined risk score, future suitability of species, and the percentage of forest biomass loss due to natural disturbances to be allocated to the buffer pool.

Fields provided for each hexagon:

- hex_id: Unique identifier of the hexagon.

- Species Name: Name of the species.

- Species Presence: Boolean indicating presence/absence according to the European Atlas of Forest Tree Species.

- Disturbance Event Risk Type: Indicates whether the disturbance risk is provided at the species genus level or at the general forest level.

- Suitability-Disturbance Risk: Metric combining predicted species suitability and disturbance event risk.

- Biomass Loss Ratio: Estimated percentage of biomass lost to a disturbance.

In addition, two supplementary files are provided:

- A PDF document describing the methodology.

- A CSV table reporting buffer pool estimates for combinations of bioregion, forest type, and disturbance risk.

Disclaimer: This dataset is a prototype and spatial data are currently available only for Italy. It is provided for testing and exploratory purposes only. Use with caution, as its structure, content, and coverage are subject to change in future updates, which aim to expand it to the rest of Europe.

Data access

PDF

PDF – Portable Document Format – is a file format developed to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware and operating systems. Based on the PostScript language, each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, vector graphics, raster images and other information needed to display it. PDF was standardized as an open format and does not require any royalties for its implementation.

Downloadable file

A downloadable file for the dataset.

Use conditions
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International

CC BY 4.0 lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon the author’s work, even commercially, as long as they credit the author for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licences offered. Recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licenced materials.

Access conditions
No limitations

Anybody can directly and anonymously access the data, without being required to register or authenticate.

Esri Shape

SHP – shapefile format – is a popular geospatial vector data format for geographic information system (GIS) software. Esri shapefile is a zip archive that contains at least the shp, shx and dbf files.

CSV

CSV – comma-separated values – files store tabular data (numbers and text) in plain text. Each line of the file is a data record. Each record consists of one or more fields, separated by commas.
