Land Productivity Dynamics

Acronym: LPD

Description

Land Productivity Dynamics (LPD) is a global indicator designed to assess the long-term changes in terrestrial vegetation productivity. It provides essential insights into the state and trends of land health by analyzing satellite-derived vegetation indices over multi-decadal periods. LPD captures the direction and magnitude of changes in biomass production, identifying areas of increasing, stable, or declining productivity. It is particularly useful for monitoring land degradation, supporting land use planning, and evaluating the progress towards international environmental targets such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 15.3.1 on land degradation neutrality). LPD is based on time-series analysis of metrics like the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), allowing for spatially explicit assessments at global, national, and sub-national scales.
