Description
Activation date: 2023-11-14
Event type: Humanitarian
Activation reason:
This activation (a continuation and update of EMSN120 for 2023) focuses on several villages situated on both sides of the Panj River in the Tajik/Afghan border region, at an altitude of 2,500 – 3,200 m.The villages are positioned along the tributaries of the Panj River. There, precipitation exhibits strong localized variations in duration and intensity. In recent years, rainfall has increasingly adopted a pattern of intensive bursts within a relatively short period. These heavy rains are the primary cause of mudslides in the region. The tributaries flowing through the villages, whose flooding strength has heightened in recent years, pose a threat to the people and assets of the area.In this context, the planning of activities by NGOs associated with food security (such as the construction of new irrigation canals, rehabilitation of canal structures, and planning of drinking water pipelines) should aim to assess the current exposure situation of assets, including housing, buildings, infrastructures, and agricultural components. This planning will safeguard agricultural production and, consequently, ensure food security in the region. A sustainable approach to planning these activities will enhance the population's resilience in this fragile environment. This activation will yield the following products:1. Mapping of buildings, houses, and infrastructures in the study area, based on the most current situation.2. Mapping and delineation of agricultural plots with measurement of their sizes for the agricultural season 2023.3. Analysis of the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, a proxy for land productivity) for the year 2023.4. Mapbook featuring overview and detailed maps of buildings and infrastructures. The results of this activation will be available by mid-December 2023.
