Description
Activation date: 2023-12-20
Event type: Flood
Activation reason:
In September 2023, Thessaly Region, Greece, was hit by extended floods due to heavy rainfall. After three months, an area north, north-west of Karla lake is still flooded. The On-demand Mapping service has been activated toto provide the Ministry of Rural Development and Food with a delineation product of the current flooded area for the planning of the necessary recovery measures. Two Flood Delineation products (P04) have been generated to depict the current situation within the area of interest. The first product, generated by using the Sentine-1 acquisition taken on 18 December 2023, has been further refined using the Sentinel-2 image acquired the day after. The analysis shows a large area still flooded, covering about 10,000 hectares. The flood impact assessment (P14 product) has been evaluated, based on the flood extent derived through the P04 products, the reference datasets, and the population information obtained through the WorldPop dataset. The product has been delivered by reporting, in tabular form, the impact of the flood extent provided by the P04 products.
