Landslide delineation in Slovenia (2023-09-17)

Collection: CEMS-RRM : CEMS Risk and Recovery Mapping

Description

Activation date: 2023-09-17

Event type: Mass movement

Activation reason:

The landslides in Eastern Slovenia caused by heavy rainfalls on 17 May 2023 were object to investigate, geolocate and quantify using post event data of CEMS’s Aerial component. Very severe damages were caused by the slipping mud masses. Transportation networks and further infrastructure like electricity or water supply are broken and interrupted. Even houses are affected and damaged/ destroyed. Considering the severity of the event besides this RRM-FLEX activation, further analysis were performed in the Copernicus Emergency Mapping System. For Western Slovenia the CEMS Rapid Mapping component was activated (EMSR691). For the area in Eastern Slovenia, also object of this activation, landslide and soil erosion risk were assessed within RRM-STD activation EMSN158. In this area the acquisition of further UAV data with its very high geometric resolution allowed to classify the landslides structures (P1) to reveal the complexity and to support clean-up, reconstruction, and overall safety and supports the Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief of the Republic of Slovenia with further high-resolution insights.Proposed solution and results·      Landslide delineation based on post-event aerial images captured by the CEMS aerial component. Landslides were divided into smaller objects characterising different elements such as landslide body or accumulation area.·      Mapbook showing the extent and volume of the landslides per AOI in detail maps as well as one general overview map and one for each AOI.
